Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, said Mr Burke has confirmed in Parliamentary Question Time this week that Labor would move ahead with the increased tax on quarantine inspection, and that Mr Burke was not moved in the slightest by the major concerns raised by rural industry businesses and workers.
Mrs Hull said today that she has received calls from export businesses in the Riverina who are furious with the Government’s plan to remove the 40 percent subsidy for AQIS services.
“These local businesses are enraged at the audacity of the Government’s proposal to almost double their exporting costs, which they tell me will directly impact the farmers who are already struggling with the current environment and increasing costs of production,” Mrs. Hull said.
“We have to understand that these increased quarantine and inspection fees have the very real potential to irreversibly damage businesses in the Riverina and other rural regions. The extra costs will have a significant impact on the industry, which could result in job losses.
“Minister Burke should be doing everything within his power to support jobs in regional Australia, not damage local economies, with exporters playing such an important role in the Riverina.
The estimated cost of $40 million to industry is a lot of money when you factor in the present economic downturn and the fact that other countries do not levy full cost recovery for quarantine charges upon their exporters.”

“The Coalition introduced the AQIS inspection service 60:40 cost sharing arrangements with exporters in 2001 and extended it again in 2005-06 for a further four years. We have solid form supporting Australia’s agricultural exporters.

“In addition, provisions for a further four years had already been made under the provisional forward estimates,” Mrs. Hull said.

Mrs Hull said she would continue to fight for local jobs, and would continue to fight to ensure Australian exporters were not taxed out of existence by the Rudd Government.

<enclosure url="http://www.kayhull.com.au/Portals/0/media/40p subsidy for AQIS services.doc" type="application/msword" length="117248"
