The Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, is on the hunt for the most senseless piece of government red tape in the Riverina, as part of the Coalition’s campaign to support small business and slash red tape.

Mrs Hull said the Coalition wants to hear from local businesses to find the worst piece of red tape in the land and she is calling on businesses in the Riverina to nominate the forms and filings they believe should be axed.

“Red tape is a huge burden on small businesses,” Mrs Hull said.

“It’s time-consuming for those who just want to get on with running their operations, growing their business whilst protecting and creating jobs. Government red tape means businesses in the Riverina are missing out on business openings and opportunities to expand.

“Before I entered into politics I was a small business owner and operator myself so I have an understanding of the trials and tribulations that come with running a business, and the burden of regulations.

“I am extremely proud of the Riverina’s small businesses. The determination I see throughout the electorate during these extremely tough times is quite extraordinary and the coalition want to build on that by reducing red tape to the lowest in the developed world.

While the Rudd Labor Government has made much noise about making life easier for small businesses, out of 27 ‘priority’ reform areas during 18 months in government, it has managed to achieve only one change – a national reform of wine labelling.

The Coalition is committed to working with all levels of government – federal, state and local – to provide a one-stop-shop online portal for all forms and filings required of local small businesses.

“I urge local small businesses to send through to my Wagga Wagga office their most ludicrous piece of red tape, preferably by Friday 21 August,” Mrs. Hull said.

The Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, today encouraged eligible Riverina charity and non-profit organisations to take advantage of the DonorTec program, which is dedicated to helping community organisations improve their technology.

“The DonorTec Program is brought to you by Community Information Strategies Australia Inc, trading as Connecting Up Australia, in partnership with the not-for-profit technology capacity building organisation TechSoup Global,” Mrs. Hull said.

“Via the DonorTec Program eligible Australian charities and nonprofits can request donated technology products from partners such as Microsoft, and Cisco.

“I encourage all of the Riverina’s community organisations to take the time to find out if they are eligible for the program,” Mrs. Hull said.

Criteria for eligibility can be seen at www.donortec.com.au/eligibility while full details of all current partners can be found at www.donortec.com.au/Donor-Partners
Eligible organisations are required to pay a small Administrative Fee to cover the costs of the program. Whilst the Administrative Fees vary, non-profit organisations stand to make savings of between 92-96% on typical retail prices.

To gain access to the program, organisations must register via the on-line registration form www.donortec.com.au/user/register

In the Government’s response to the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission report which contains 123 recommendations to reform health the Government has announced they will study this report in detail and will again embark on a series of consultations across the country including 25 major teaching hospitals to again hear from the front line.

“Kevin Rudd promised to fix hospitals and health two years ago,” Mrs. Hull said.

“At the last election he promised to do so by June this year or he would seek a mandate to takeover hospitals from the States.

“This week he has re-pledged that tired old promise again.

“Mr Rudd has broken his promise to fix public hospitals and he has no plan for action. Instead he’s starting more consultations which is exactly what the NHHRC did.

“By performing this incredible back flip Kevin Rudd is promising the same in health for the next 10 years as State Labor Governments have delivered for the last 10 years.

“Mr Rudd will again throw good money after bad with no fundamental reform as promised by him two years ago,” Mrs. Hull said.

“Our population is ageing rapidly and we need to ensure that the challenges of tomorrow are met.

Approximately $14.8 million has been committed to the Murrumbidgee CMA over the next four years through the Caring for Our Country (C4OC) program, The Nationals Members for Riverina, Kay Hull, advised today.

“Murrumbidgee CMA has been allocated the highest baseline funding of all Natural Resource Management organisations across Australia which is very exciting news,” Mrs. Hull said.

“This funding will assist in developing Murrumbidgee CMA’s exciting new suite of projects that will build on the success of their programs over the past five years and help build more resilient landscapes.

“A range of projects which are still to be fully finalised will be delivered by the Murrumbidgee CMA, including; a program focusing on sites of cultural heritage significance; a program to protect breeding and nesting grounds of more than 20,000 bird species, including threatened species such as Australian Bittern, Painted Snipe and Sharp-tailed Sand Piper around Leeton; and workshops for land managers designed to improve on-farm productivity and have significant biodiversity outcomes.

“There are quite a number of projects and the Murrumbidgee CMA will release further details once they are finalised,” Mrs. Hull said.

The Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, will be visiting two local Cootamundra businesses, Moore Clothing and Simply Shooz & Fashion, on Tuesday 4 August as part of the NSW Business Chamber’s annual Pollies for Small Business program.

Pollies for Small Business allows small business operators the chance to raise their concerns directly with their local MP, and at the same time gives the local MP a better insight into the local businesses.

Mrs. Hull said she was looking forward to spending some quality time with two of the town’s local businesses, and gaining a better understanding of how their day to day operations work.
“Before I entered into politics I was a business owner and operator myself so I have an understanding of the trials and tribulations that come with the job,” Mrs. Hull said.

“It is vitally important for me to be constantly in touch and in tune with the local business owners in the Riverina.

The NSW Business Chamber Pollies for Small Business program is run in cooperation with the local Chamber of Commerce network.

Last year 102 State and Federal politicians took part from the major parties, greens and independents, including the Premier and NSW Opposition Leader.

The Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, is encouraging Riverina residents to become continence aware during Continence Awareness Week 2009 (2 to 8 August), in an effort to reduce undisclosed and untreated incontinence.

“Over 4 million Australians experience poor bladder or bowel control, a significant quality of life issue for 1 in 5 Australians,” Mrs. Hull said.

“Incontinence can almost always be better managed, treated and sometimes cured, yet 50% of people do not disclose their incontinence, even with their GP.

“Incontinence presents a significant additional load for carers – socially, emotionally, and financially.

“Professional help is available. The National Continence Helpline is a free call, and is staffed by expert continence nurse advisors who can provide confidential advice, free resources, referrals for local continence services and help with Government subsidy schemes for continence products,” Mrs. Hull said.

The National Continence Helpline freecalltm number is 1800 33 00 66.

The Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, is encouraging Riverina residents during Diabetes Awareness Week (11-18 July), to be aware of the dangers of high blood pressure and the link to diabetes.

Mrs. Hull said that people with and at risk of diabetes should be aware that high blood pressure is a risk factor for developing diabetes and its serious complications.

“Information released through Diabetes Australia-NSW, explains that high blood pressure affects muscles particularly and other parts of the body causing insulin resistance, and insulin is a part of diabetes,” Mrs. Hull said.

“The insulin resistance results in the pancreas gland not making enough insulin for the situation, which causes diabetes,” Mrs. Hull said.

High blood pressure is not only a major risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes, but people who already have diabetes (type 1 or type 2) are twice as likely to have high blood pressure, increasing their risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and eye problems.

A recent study by Diabetes Australia-NSW has revealed a staggering lack of awareness about the link between high blood pressure and diabetes, which Mrs. Hull said was a great concern.

A booklet which simplifies the present carbon debate has been produced by The Nationals Member for Riverina Kay Hull and is presently being distributed to households within the electorate.

The eight-page publication outlines the Emissions Trading Scheme, Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme and issues of carbon in general.

“There is so much talk within the local community about the various schemes and carbon and how it relates to the climate I decided to produce a plain-speak publication which gives an overview of the topic,” Mrs Hull said.

The booklet has been produced in collaboration with carbon experts Dr Chris Mitchell and Graeme Sandral who recently spoke at well-attended carbon information sessions arranged by Mrs Hull and held in Griffith, Temora and Wagga Wagga.

The booklet details what is carbon dioxide, where does it come from, what is the carbon cycle, carbon trading and the national and global response to present concerns about greenhouse gases.

“It is an informative publication, presented in an easy-to-read format with diagrams to help explain things and I encourage residents to read it when it arrives in the mail,” Mrs Hull said.

The Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, today issued a word of warning to anyone looking at taking up the Government’s Insulation rebate offer.

“While I certainly encourage householders to see if they are eligible for the rebate please be aware that the rebate will only be paid if the installer of the insulation is registered on the Government’s Installer Provider Register,” Mrs. Hull said.

The insulation rebate is available through the Homeowner Insulation Program ($1600) and the Low Emission Assistance Plan for Renters ($1000).

“What is concerning is that as of 2 July there were only 13 registered installers in the Riverina; 6 in Wagga Wagga, 2 in Griffith and Temora, and 1 in Gundagai, West Wyalong and Yenda.

“Hopefully more will register in the Riverina as quite a few of our towns do not have a registered provider.

“Obviously if some of our towns do not have a registered provider there will be some considerable issues with accessing the program. I am hoping that local tradespeople, who are qualified, will apply to be a registered installer. Please go to www.environment.gov.au/insulation-installers for further information on how to register.

“If any tradesmen are having difficulties registering on the Government’s Installer Provider Register please contact my office on 6921 4600.

“For further information on the programs and to search for a registered installer please call 1800 808 571 or visit www.environment.gov.au/energyefficiency,” Mrs. Hull said.
