About Kay
Hull
Kay Hull is very passionate
about representing the Riverina electorate and her main focuses
have been on regional economic development, small business, health
and aged care and disability issues.
Kay was elected in
1998 and was the first NSW Nationals woman to be elected to Federal
Parliament.
She firmly believes
that no other party represents the needs of rural Australia as
well as The Nationals and that The Nationals can make a difference
in the lives of rural Australians. Consequently she is totally
committed to the future of country people.
Kay was born and raised
in Guyra in New South Wales and worked in Sydney and overseas
in the investment and tourism industry.
A successful Wagga
Wagga business owner-operator since 1978, Kay is also a former
councillor and Deputy Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga and board
member of Tourism NSW.
Kay is a wife, mother
and grandmother and is very devoted to caring for her family.
Kay continues to fight
for improved conditions in the Riverina electorate and funding
for various projects.
The total funding the
Riverina has received since she was elected has exceeded $8 billion
and continues to increase.
In Kay’s maiden speech she advised the Parliament that the
most pressing concern in her electorate was the current state
of health in country areas. She went on to say that there is a
real need for the Federal Government to be more accountable in
the way in which moneys paid… are then tied to outcomes
and that funding must result in improved services to our communities.
Since elected, Kay
has had the community’s best interests in the forefront
as she crossed the floor to vote against the sale of Telstra,
strongly opposed the sale of Snowy Hydro, continually lobbying
for the Coolac bypass and the duplication of the Hume Highway
and West St flyover at Gundagai and in the past years of devastating
drought conditions, has been pushing to ensure Exceptional Circumstances
assistance has been extended to the many growers and businesses
in the Riverina.
Kay’s community
involvements have been extensive with her passion for the tourism,
youth and sporting industry dominating. As such, she was a board
member of Tourism NSW, Chairman of the Council of Tourist Associations
of NSW and Chairman of Tourism Wagga Wagga. Kay is also proud
to be a patron to a number of organisations including the disability
sector which she passionately represents.
Kay has been honoured
as a Paul Harris fellow and is a recipient of the Rod Murdoch
Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Tourism
in New South Wales.
During Kay's time in
Parliament she has handed down major reports into substance abuse
titled “Road to Recovery” and the historic child custody
titled "Every Picture Tells a Story" that has seen significant
changes in the Family Law Act and the Child Support Act. Kay is
also the co-convenor of the Parliamentary Cancer Information Network.
